Third day: a little walk on the sea and in history

Cefalù is also known for its sea. The village is stormed by tourists during the summer because the beaches are wide and comfortable, the water is crystal clear and there are breathtaking views.

And yet, it is in the other seasons that the sea of Cefalù best expresses its charm.

View of the sea from Piazza Marina, Porta Pescara, Piazza Marina, and the old pier

The tour to discover the seaside of Cefalù starts from a symbolic place: Porta Pescara, the only survivor of the four gates from medieval times, characterized by a majestic Gothic arch..

From here an esplanade on the sea extends, with a long pier from which the city beach can be observed, starting from the historic centre with the fishermen's houses and pointed arches used as shelter for boats.

This area was the set of the film "Cinema Paradiso" directed by Giuseppe Tornatore (1988).

Route on the rocks

Accessible by stairs around the pier, this path leads to Porta Giudecca, the characteristic entrance door of the historic Jewish quarter, which represents “a village within a village".

The itinerary is made on the rocks, close to the sea, to make the walk along the megalithic walls easy in a unique landscape.

Megalithic walls and Postierla

Probably built in the 5th century BC, perhaps on remote pre-existing walls, they are called megalithic because they are composed of huge blocks.

Several times they have been renovated and integrated, until at least the 16th century. It is possible to observe the different “seams” descending on the rocks from the Postierla, a scenic opening in the walls.

Capo Marchiafava Bastion and Digital Museum

A mighty 17th century defensive stronghold, from which a breathtaking view can be enjoyed. Today houses a digital museum: the augmented reality system allows an immersive experience among the monumental assets of the UNESCO site “Arab-Norman Palermo and the Cathedrals of Cefalù and Monreale".

Open every day from 11:30AM to 4PM and from 6PM to midnight
