The surroundings of Cefalù offer a lot to do and see: naturalistic paths, hidden destinations that are little explored by tourists and traditions that reveal the most authentic soul of this place.
Sanctuary of Gibilmanna
Situated at 800m above sea level and surrounded by the woods of Pizzo Sant'Angelo, the Sanctuary of Gibilmanna is a famous destination for pilgrimages to the Most Holy Mary, patroness of the Diocese of Cefalù, of which the splendid marble effigy (attributed to Antonello Gagini, 16th century) of the Virgin with the Child Jesus is venerated. According to the tradition, the convent and the original church were founded in the 6th century by Pope Gregory the Great.
It is 15 km from Cefalù and from the square of the Sanctuary the view extends along a large stretch of the Tyrrhenian coast.
Serra Guarneri
It is the favourite place for people from Cefalù in search of nature and relax.
A forest of evergreen holm oaks, mixed with oaks and other flora, protected as an integral nature reserve.
It dominates Sant'Ambrogio, a hamlet of Cefalù, and allows you to admire a landscape that ranges from the Fortress of Cefalù to the Aeolian Islands, to various peaks of the Madonie such as Pizzo Carbonara.
Located about 3 km from the SS 113, it is a destination for environmental education routes especially for children and teenagers.
Sant'Ambrogio
Hamlet of Cefalù, located 6 km to the east and with about 300 inhabitants, looks like a charming terrace overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea, with houses and narrow streets typically intertwined.
It was probably born as a village of peasants, between the 17th and 18th century, perhaps in part of Lombard origins (as show the cult of St.Ambrose and the close contrada Linate).
Characteristic of the patronal feast of Most Holy Mary of Health.
