Sixth and seventh day: the Madonie

Cefalù is part of Madonie Park, an open-air botanical atlas with UNESCO Geopark recognition.

Here there are many destinations and activities possible, but also the villages that can be visited by stopping in Cefalù (it is easily connected to nearby centres and therefore represents the ideal place to stay to discover the Madonie).

Trails, woods, and adventures

Among the possible activities at the Madonie Park, there are trekking surrounded by oak forests, holm oaks and olive trees; birdwatching; spring snowshoeing in Monte Mufara (about 40 km from Cefalù, 1865 meters above sea level); exploring the woods of Piano Cervi to spot fallow deer and other local fauna; horseback riding on the paths used in the past for transhumance; quad riding on a short path within the borders of Cefalù (Cefalù – Sant'Ambrogio) or a long one on the paths of the “ancient shepherds” (Cefalù – Castelbuono).

For the more daring there are the Adventure Park, the Zipline Madonita, the only one in Italy at 1000 meters high, and paragliding.

Astronomical Park Gal Hassin of Isnell

Managed by the Italian Space Agency, it is the ideal destination for lovers of science and astronomy.

It brings together the research station (the highest Astronomical Observatory in Italy) and an educational centre with the Space and Time Park, the museum on astronautics, meteorites and lunar missions, an observational terrace, and a large planetarium open to all that allows a 360-degree immersion in the world of astronomy.

Here the light pollution is very low and thanks to the precious instruments you can admire all the beauty of the stars on Cefalù.

It is about 20 km away; online booking is required.

Gorges of Tiberius

It is a canyon approximately 350 meters long, created by the millennia-old action of the waters of the Pollina River.

The smooth limestone walls overlooking the valley form a set of extraordinary landscape and naturalistic interest and are the ideal habitat for numerous plant and animal species.

Wild and inhospitable until some time ago, today you can visit and travel by rubber dinghy.

Since 2001 the gorges are one of the Geopark sites recognized by UNESCO.

They are situated about 27 km from Cefalù.
