Cefalù owes its current name to Kephaloidion, from the Greek kephale, which means "head", with reference to the Fortress that dominates it.
It is located just behind the famous Norman cathedral and its profile makes Cefalù immediately recognizable on the coast.
The spectacular cliff is 268 meters high, and it is a must not only for those who want to go back to the origin of this place but also for nature and trekking lovers.
The Fortress
The effort to climb the stairs from Piazza Garibaldi is fully rewarded by the view.
Proceeding along the staircase you see all Cefalù revealing itself little by little. During the sunset a particular light cast over it.
From the top of this spectacular fortress, you can see what the alleys hide, such as the perimeter of the fortified walls and the seabed through the clear water.
Here you can also spend the whole day because at the top there is an area equipped for picnics and relax.
Must see: the megalithic building called Temple of Diana, which dates to protohistoric era and encloses a “dolmen " cistern; then the structures of the small high-medieval town, the panoramic point with the iron Cross overhanging the Cathedral, the crenelated walls, and the ruins of the castle of Norman origin but of Federician structure on the top.
